Tatsumi Hijikata土方巽

Tatsumi Hijikata

Founder of ”Dance of Darkness." Learned modern dance after he graduated from high school. When he visited Tokyo at the age of 21, Kazuo Ohno's dance gave a great impression on him. In 1959, Hijikata performed "Forbidden Color" with Kazuo's second son, Yoshito Ohno. In the 60s, Hijikata performed and directed experimental pieces along with Kazuo Ohno and Yoshito Ohno, and called their activities as Ankoku Buto-ha. Hjikata directed Kazuo Ohno's master pieces, "Admiring La Argentina," "My Mother," and "The Dead Sea."

1928 Born in Akita

1946 Studied German Expressionim dance under Katsuko Masumuta in Akita

1953   Joined Mitsuko Ando Dance Institute. Appeared in TV shows as a dancer. 

1959   Performed "Forbidden Colour." Acquainted Yukio Mishima. Held Tatsumi Hijikata Dance Experience. 

1963   Tatsumi Hijikata Dance Experience "Masseur, A Story that supports Passion" 

1969   Solo recital "Tatsumi Hijikata and Japanese - Rebellion of the Body" 

1972   Held "27 nights for 4 seasons."  More than 8500 audience gathered. 

1977   Directed Kazuo Ohno's "Admiring La Argentina" 

1985   Constituted Butoh Festival 1985. 

1986   Passed away in January.
